Best of 2005 - The Belle Isle Aquarium, a Last Look - Mark Houston - 133/325 - World Wide Panorama
I'm not sure if this is my “Best” VR panorama from 2005, but to me it is the most important.
Designed by Albert Kahn and opened to the public in 1904, the Belle Isle Aquarium was North America's oldest continuously operating public aquarium.
The aquarium was the home of 146 species, many of these were native Michigan fish.
It is a shame that great places like the Belle Isle Aquarium are forced to close.

Special display configurations for immersive or semi-immersive VR/AR applications that require permanent and artificial projection canvases might become unnecessary.
This potentially gives some application domains – like architecture – the possibility to benefit from the conceptual overlaps of AR and VR.
The Virtual Aquarium including different corals and swimming fish was designed as a demo.
The project was done in cooperation with the Mystic Aquarium in Conneticut, USA.
Hector VR system Hector is a script-based distributed platform independent VR system.
Modern VR systems embrace the idea of using scripts for rapid prototyping of applications, Hector is one step further: the entire core of the VR system is written in Python to enable rapid prototyping not only for applications but for the VR system itself..
Two applications were created during the project: a physical based VR racer with haptic wheel input and a pool simulation.
Research projects include photometric and geometric calibration of camera-based projection systems, interactive physical simulation of puppets, distributed, script-based VR system design, consistent illumination withing augmented environments, workflow model design for interactive AR and VR applications and many more.
