Radio Free Silver Lake: Mini-Interview: Sea Wolf
Wednesday, March 01, 2006 Mini-Interview: Sea Wolf I’m lucky enough to have a group of friends who have great taste in music, and I guess smart enough to trade recommendations back and forth with them frequently.
One of the best bands that I recently learned about through this little regular musical pot luck is Sea Wolf , an act fronted by Alex Church, who is also in the excellent LA indie pop band, Irving ..
When my friend Josh first sent me the link to Sea Wolf’s myspace page , it only had an early mix of the song “You’re a Wolf” on it, but that was enough to make me track down their self-titled EP.
Now, flash forward several months later, Sea Wolf recently played a sold-out night at the cavernous El Cid and will appear this Thursday at The Echo , a show that you really shouldn’t miss if you have any interest in going since the band won't play again until May..
This week, I emailed back and forth with Sea Wolf ’s Alex Church to find out more about the band's past, present, and future..
Alex Church: Sea Wolf is me with revolving members of The Ship Collective .
I began writing songs for Sea Wolf four years ago, but only when I came up with the name (two and a half years ago - and it's taken from Jack London's The Sea Wolf ) did it officially become real.
Jack London: The Sea-Wolf
In The Sea-Wolf, Captain Larsen is known by no other name than 'Wolf'.
Wolf Larsen perhaps best represents London's admiration for brute strength — the Nietzschean superman.
He is well-educated without formal schooling, a superb seaman, a powerful and fearless fighter, totally without faith or humility even in the direst circumstances.

The Sea Wolf - Riveting Sea Story: Jack Londons Ranch Album
' The Sea-Wolf was written in six months and was started May 5, 1903 on a mossy shelf down the slope from Wake Robin Lodge on the bank of Graham Creek during the time of Jack's breakup with Bessie.
According to Jack, most of the events in the book were drawn from his own experience aboard the Sophie Sutherland, but actually they were more from the 'sea yarns' related either by some of the old seafarers who were his shipmates or by the newspaper accounts of Captain Alexander McLean, who was the prototype for Wolf Larsen.'.
Within the year, he married Charmian Kittredge, who is represented in The Sea-Wolf by Maud Brewster, the woman who comes aboard the Ghost in the second half of the book.
The prose is vigorous, the story exciting, the characters real, and the intellectual tone in the confrontation between Humphrey Van Weyden's idealism and Wolf Larsen's materialism stimulating.
As a great sea story of action and adventure, it appeals strongly to the young male reader.
