Red Sea Fishes Recently Found in the Mediterranean .
Enlarge Page Size Abstract At least 24 species of fishes have passed from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea since the Suez Canal was opened in 1869.
Records of another 26 species collected in the Mediterranean and alleged to be of Red Sea origin are shown to be based on misidentification or probable errors in determining the source of material.
There are no reliable records of Mediterranean species penetrating into the Red Sea.
One is known from the Mediterranean coast of Egypt only, nine are not recorded farther north than Israel, 13 are known as far as the Anatolian coast of Turkey, and seven have reached the Aegean Sea.
Several Red Sea species were observed in the Mediterranean for the first time within the last 10 years.
While Red Sea species constitute only 9% of the fish fauna of the Mediterranean coast of Israel, their ecological importance is fairly great since 18 species are among the more common in this area, and nine are commercially exploited..
Interview with Theodore N. Gill
"There are strange-looking creatures at the bottom of the sea, " said Prof.
Professor Gill is one of the highest authorities on fishes in the United States, and in his little den up the tower of the gothic pile built with Mr.
From time to time, however, strange and unfamiliar forms of fishes were found by accident, either floating on the surface or caught by fishermen.
These forms bore every impress of coming from great depths and naturalists had the suspicion forced upon them that they had not by any means explored the domain of the sea.
These new-found fishes had loose, flaccid structures; their bones were fibrous and so soft as to be easily penetrated by a needle, and their eyes were large.
Experiments in deep-sea dredging were begun by a number of gentlemen at their own expense, and the result showed that the ocean was literally alive with fish.
" How deep are fish found in the sea? ".
Very frequently, fishes which are brought up in dredges or trawls from greater depths burst in pieces before they can be examined.".
" Are fishes specially equipped for living in such deep water? ".
We can hardly imagine that there is any light at 10, 000 or 15, 000 feet below the surface and yet there must be some, or else the fishes would be blind.
