Guide of RETURN TO THE SEA

Islands - Return To The Sea Review - sputnikmusic
I won't drone on about my dislike of the whole organization and their fellating of (to my estimating) average/awful indie bands, but one day when one of my friends said to me 'I know theyre evil, but you should really check out this band called Islands' I took a chance.
To start off, this album already gets an extra point from me for creating an opening track ('Swans') despite its 9 minutes and 34 second running time, that actually doesn't drag on.
Far from it, its actually one of the best tracks on the album and in a way its the most suitable opening track.
The instrumentation, for one is very accomplished, the bass, piano, guitar and the vocals create an effective momentum of rythym and melody, its evident from the first and many other tracks that this band have an almost classical approach and knowledge of music.
Whats more their style is damn near impossible to define, its all over the place.
There's quirky indie pop, Calypso and Tropical island influences in there and some Jazz and Classical moments, along with some other genres I probably left out.
Lead singer Nicholas Thorburns voice is also in my opinion pretty easy to like, sounding vaguely like a slightly higher pitched Benjamin Gibbard of death cab for cutie, he manages to pull off some bizarre lyrics.

A return to the Sea of Cortez Team of writers and scientists re-creates Steinbeck's voyage to Mexico's once-remote waters Carl Nolte, Chronicle Staff Writer .
A boatload of admirers of novelist John Steinbeck and his friend, biologist Ed Ricketts, said Thursday that re-creating the pair's 1940 voyage to the Sea of Cortez was harder work than they thought, but that the waters of Baja California were more intriguing than they had imagined.
The expedition, a mixture of writers and scientists who shoved off in March aboard the 73-foot fishing boat Gus D on a trip of their dreams, just returned from following the tracks chronicled in Steinbeck's classic 'Log From the Sea of Cortez.'' In Steinbeck's time, the Sea of Cortez was a remote and bleak corner of the world, literally a backwater, alive with an amazing biodiversity of sea and tidal life.
Now, large portions of Baja California have been turned into resorts, particularly Cabo San Lucas, which is the northern edge of what the travel industry likes to call 'the Mexican Riviera.'' 'A lot of it is gone, '' said William Gilly, a Stanford biology professor who led the modern-day expedition.

Return to the Sea - Islands - Song Listings
On their debut record, Return to the Sea, Montreal's Islands have crafted a rich, exciting, and emotionally deep sounding album that carries on the freewheeling spirit and sound of the Unicorns as well as that of the Elephant 6 bands of the late '90s.
You see, Islands singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer Nick Diamonds and drummer Jaime were members of the Unicorns and they have taken the strengths of that band, amplified and adjusted them, added a few more vital ingredients, and come up with a disc that satisfies on a variety of levels and rates among the best indie rock around.
The Unicorns were a lo-fi, experimental car crash of a band, equal parts whimsy and exuberance; Islands are a much more adult and measured experience with a much cleaner sound and more classic arrangements (lots of strings, accordions, standup bass, and pianos to go with the cheap synthesizers).
Diamonds' voice is much less whimsical; he has scaled back on the Coyne meter from nine to around five and now conveys his slightly off-kilter lyrics with more emotion and honesty.
Despite the changes, the group hasn't lost any of the sunshine-addled spark that the Unicorns had, as songs like the whirling 'Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby' or 'Jogging Gorgeous Summer' (which comes kitted out with steel drums and recorder!) clearly demonstrate.
