PHY\'s MIDWATER/Mesopelagic
Below are fishes we caught from the mesopelagic (midwater) zone of the ocean off Oregon (200-800m deep).
Return to my MAIN DEEP-SEA PAGE for details on animal collection; and for TOPIC CONTENTS (or use pull-down menu, below).
Some of these photos are mine, others are ones I took from the ROV Oceanic Explorer 's or Alvin's cameras..
Pelagic animals are those that live in the open water, not closely associated with the seafloor.
Benthic (bottom-associated) animals are found on most of my other animal webpages (use the menu, upper right)..
These are fish that we caught either as our deep-sea bottom otter trawl rose, or by our midwater trawl (figure, left top).
Most are MESOPELAGIC (about 200-1000m), but some of these species are also found in the deeper BATHYPELAGIC zone (below 1000m) and ABYSSOPELAGIC (below about 3000m, but poorly defined).
Other pictures below were obtained from submersibles..
Animals have very low protein contents and relatively weak muscles (our research found 5-10% protein in most deepsea fish species' muscles, compared to 15-20% for epipelagic fish like tunas).
They also often have special adaptations to cope with low light levels, such as large eyes and photophores (light-producing organs)--about 75% of mesopelagic organisms are bioluminescent.

In 1742, Vitus Bering's men returned with sea otter pelts from the historic voyage of discovery of Alaska.
Interest in these rich furs initiated an era of exploitation which almost wiped out the sea otter.
Endres The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) lives in shallow water areas along the shores of the North Pacific.
Its range once extended from southern California north then west through the Aleutian Islands, to the Kamchatka Peninsula, and south to the northern islands of Japan.
Endres Sea otters are members of the weasel family (Mustelidae) and are related to mink and river otters.
Probably because of this vulnerability, they are seldom found more than a few yards from water.
This, combined with the prominent whiskers, leads to the nickname of 'Old Man of the Sea.' © Patrick J.
Endres The fur, which is possibly the finest in the world, consists of a very dense underfur of inch-long fibers and sparse guard hairs.
Guard hairs may be black, pale brown, or silver, often giving a veiled effect of silvery hairs on a dark background.

Sea Otter Classic 2007 Photos, Videos and Results
Daniel Ramsey (above) was the winner of the Pro Circuit Road Race riding solo for the last six laps.
Also, steephill.tv correspondent, Mike Norris, was at the Sea Otter Classic taking pictures at the various events that encompass this bike festival including bmx, mountain biking and road racing.
A Rainy Saturday at Sea Otter by Mike Norris The debris flows that shut down the women's pro circuit race created delays for the start men's pro circuit race and general disruptions to all the events.
The Sea Otter Organizers scrambled to stabilize the courses, for the sake of the competitors and the courses themselves.
Initially the Men's race was delayed an hour from it's initial start time of 1 until 2PM.
Around 2:30, the race officials began congregating into position, but it was nearly 3PM before the race actual was started (my camera's clock is off by 1 hour.
There was some drizzle for the first bit of the race, but that soon died out and the wind picked up, drying the track and chilling everyone out.
The sun was a nice break for me, but I'm not sure the riders felt much of it.
The wind pushed the riders up the first part of the hill, became a hard cross wind throughout the Rahal straight pushing the riders into onto the warning track, and was a head wind down the corkscrew.
