Incorporating Pet Fish Into Your Small Animal Practice
Incorporating Pet Fish Into Your Small Animal Practice 1 Ruth Francis-Floyd 2 Fish are the most popular pets in America, yet rarely benefit from veterinary care.
More than 65 million fish are maintained in households throughout the United States, and fish owners frequently have other pets, such as dogs, cats, and birds.
The value of individual fish can range from less than one dollar to many thousands of dollars for show quality Koi.
Home aquarists, like other animal enthusiasts, often breed and show their pets and participate in special interest groups including local aquarium societies and national organizations such as the American Cichlid Association and the American Killifish Association.
There are several factors that make it advantageous to consider adding pet fish medicine to your small animal practice at the present time.
Many recent graduates have had some level of exposure to fish medicine as part of their veterinary education, and some individuals have had one or more intensive classes and/or clinical rotations in fish medicine.
Concurrently, the Food and Drug Administration is determining which remedies sold for aquarium fish through the pet trade are appropriate for over-the-counter sales.

08-04-03 PET FISH DOCTOR "ON CALL" THROUGH NEW OSU PROGRAM
Tim Miller-Morgan, 541-867-0265 NEWPORT - Oregon State University has created one of the nation's very few Extension programs to assist the pet fish industry and hobbyists, a response to a surging interest in tropical and other ornamental fish that's being complicated by an extreme scarcity of experts in this field.
A surge of interest in ornamental fish has prompted the Sea Grant Extension Program and College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University to set up one of the nation’s few Extension programs dedicated to support of this growing industry.
Business is booming at retail stores (top left), and prices are high for such exotic pets as lionfish (above) or this expensive, grand champion goldfish (left).
The program's activities are rapidly expanding, ranging from individual advice to people about their sick guppy to work with the ornamental fish industry, research on disease management issues, consultation with retailers and veterinarians, and creation of new educational and outreach programs.
now have some type of ornamental fish in their homes and there's also a rapid increase in the larger, more expensive koi fish ponds in trendy home settings that has spurred the need for more knowledgeable experts, Miller-Morgan said.

Hawaiian Humane Society Question: I'm leaving the state, and I can't take my fish with me.
What are my options? Answer: You have a few options for your fish and the aquatic life in your tank.
Or, you can see if a pet store will take them back.
Whatever you choose, please do not release your fish into the ocean or streams.
Also, flushing your fish down the toilet can cause the fish great pain as they enter -- still alive -- into the sewer system.
Q: What if I can't find anyone to take my fish and the plants in my fish tank? A: On Oahu, aquatic life can be taken to the Waikiki Aquarium (fresh and saltwater species), state Department of Agriculture plant quarantine building, Hawaiian Humane Society and the Waimea Valley Audubon Center (freshwater species only).
On Maui, the Department of Agriculture and the Maui Humane Society (freshwater only) will take your fish.
On the Big Island, Stockley's Pets and the Department of Agriculture offices in Hilo and Kona (both freshwater only) accept fish.
On Kauai, go to the state Department of Agriculture, Kauai Humane Society (freshwater only) and Lihue Pet Shop (freshwater only).
Indicate 'Pet Ohana' in the subject line.
