Leafy Sea Dragons
We are night diving in the Southern Ocean off the southwestern coast of Australia, in search of creatures that sound almost mythical.
We are hunting for dragons--More precisely, leafy sea dragons.
The leafy sea dragon (Phycodurus eques) and its more common cousin, the weedy sea dragon (Phyllopteryx taeniolatus), are the only sea dragons in the world.
Along with sea horses and pipefish, they are members of the family Syngnathidae, fish characterized by a hard external skeleton arranged as a series of rings around the animalÆs body and by a long tubular snout with no teeth.
Sea dragons are distinctive in that frondlike appendages branch out from their armor-plated bodies.
As befits their names, the leafy sea dragonsÆ appendages are broader and flatter than the more stringy ones of the weedy dragons.
The waters off the islands of the Archipelago of the Recherche where we are diving are a favorite haunt for sea dragons.
Search or browse, make your selections, and checkout.

whitedragon • Dec 14, 2006 8:27am From the page: 'Sea Dragons are arguably the most spectacular and mysterious of all ocean fish.
Though close relatives of sea horses, sea dragons have larger bodies and leaf-like appendages which enable them to hide among floating seaweed or kelp beds.
Sea dragons feed on larval fishes and amphipods, such as and small shrimp-like crustaceans called mysids ('sea lice'), sucking up their prey in their small mouths.
Many of these amphipods feed on the red algae that thrives in the shade of the kelp forests where the sea dragons live.' 9lives3down • Aug 13, 2006 2:53pm I first saw one of the sea-dragons in a California aquarium.
