riverlog: Callaghan Creek, BC
Labor Day plans were slow in forming this year, but Jarred Jackman, Ryan Scott, Lana Young, Fish and I found ourselves in Squamish looking for the last of the BC summer creeking.
My good friend Fish calmly caught an eddy and told me to work right.
Now, Fish sometimes likes to watch me boat scout something he suspects I'd portage if given a chance, but I went for it.
I got cameras out in time for Fish's payback ...
Thanks to Lana for shooting stills and Ryan for shooting video of Fish and I running the drop..
The ledges and bedrock are gone, but excellent technical boulder gardens come fast and furious.
Fish's schadenfreude relented and he suggested some great lines as we made quick time downriver.
Fish had boat-scouted it and swam the day before, but dropped right back in to clean it this time..
Game Fish - Yellow Fin Tuna
Yellowfin tuna fishing is very popular off Cape Point.
Catching yellowfin tuna is no doubt a challenge and we do offer tag and release game fishing, however we spend most of our time diving with these magnificent game fish which can grow upwards of 100kg in our area.
Yellowfin tuna off Cape Town are most abundant in the Spring and Autumn months and whilst on our pelagic shark or bird watching trips the chances of encountering these spectacular fish is good.
On many occasions tuna are seen hunting bait fish and this always gets the heart pumping as the surface action is furious with huge fish exploding through the surface in pursuit of panic stricken bait fish.
Whilst tuna are the most common gamefish we encounter, fishing for marlin is also slowly becoming more popular and Black marlin, blue marlin and striped marlin are occasionally caught as well as the seldom seen shortbill spearfish..
Broadbill sword fishing was once excellent but due to over fishing for this species few are now caught although little effort is made to catch them by the sportfishing fleet..
If you are interested in tag and release Game fishing off Cape Town or would like to do a game fish dive please contact us and we will give you the best season for your preferred activity..

Pomfret Pomfret is the party fish in this part of the world.
If fish is served, at a lunch or dinner occasion, it has got to be pomfret.
It has a delicate flavour, a central bone and is not too fishy..
Which means I don't like to fish the bones out of my mouth and prefer something not too spiky.
It enables them to enjoy even the boniest of fish.
They also crunch up fish skeletons with alacrity.
I am told that Bengalis attribute their highly developed intellect (ahem) to their fish intake, which is pretty steep when compared to other communities ..
The fish monger slices each piece of fish like a diamond cutter works on each facet of a gem.
Pomfret is also known as Butterfish, and is available throughout India, perhaps to a greater degree in Maharashtra.
and Black Pomfret , Parastromateus niger which is known as Halwa in Hindi, Marathi and Gujerati, Karauthakoli or Karuvolli or Vellavoli in Malayalam, Karuvavalor, Vavval, or Vellaivaval in Tamil, Thellachanduva or Nallachanduva in Telegu, Thondrotte in Kannada, Slade or Butterfish in Australia, Palometa Negra in Spain, Black Pompano, Black Pomfret or Sweep in the U.S, Castoline Noire in France, Gebel in Indonesia, Kuro-Aji-Modok i in Japanese and, what do you know, Doggie in Australia.
