Last weekend Eric Covino and I made our annual winter flounder abuse trip.
We only managed a couple of short hits and saw perhaps 10 other fish caught during the two hours we spent fishing the first part of the ebb tide.
The action was so disappointing Sunday while we were at Bluff Point, we gave up early and went freshwater fishing for the latter half of the afternoon.
Back during the late-1960s and '70s when winter flounder were abundant, catching enough for a meal wasn't even a challenge.
Unfortunately, the areas we fished in those days, just downriver from the draw bridge in Mystic, are now private and closed to fishing.
A couple of us would land a dozen or so fish, basically fishing until we had enough for a meal or two, then pick up the pails and head home.
In those days, winter flounder fishing was something we did to wet a line until Bog Meadows and other local ponds warmed up for the pickerel, calicos, panfish and bass to go on their early spring rampage.
Frankly, I never much enjoyed fishing for winter flounder, because it is waiting-for-a-jerk-at-the other-end-of-the-line fishing.
Winter flounder were usually a secondary or afterthought sort of species when they were easy to catch.

2006 Fishing Report
August 27, 2006: The Fike family made a weekend of fishing and returned for a half day flounder charter.
The girls managed to catch a couple of keeper flounder though--enough for three meals.
They reeled in a total of seven flounder and two sea mullet .
August 3, 2006: Marlena Breeding's party fished for half a day and caught 10 flounder with two keepers.
The girls landed 21 flounder and had two keepers.
July 26, 2006: Clair Robinson's party had a great day on the water landing 50 flounder with 11 keepers.
Flounder fishing is still good, and you can catch all the croaker you want..
July 20, 2006: The Dagenais party from Quebec, Canada, fished for half the day today and caught 17 flounder with four keeper--two measuring 20 inches.
July 13, 2006: A corporate party of five anglers arranged in conjunction with another party of anglers aboard the Marlin Magic went flounder fishing for a half day.
The crew aboard Miyot caught 29 flounder and had two keepers.
July 12, 2006: The Bressler party landed 44 flounder today with eight keepers plus three sea mullet and five croakers .
In the end, they had 5 flounder in the cooler along with a sea mullet..

2004 Fishing Report
September 11, 2004: Ken Mergenthal, joined by his wife and daughter, spent the day aboard MIYOT fishing inshore.
Strong tides and a northwest wind in the morning made fishing difficult, but it calmed in the afternoon.
Three generations fished aboard MIYOT, and the crew landed 11 or 12 flounder --one a five pounder measuring 23 " along with a 17-1/2" and a 19" keeper.
There were 2 keeper flounder measuring 19" and 18-1/2"..
A half-day flounder charter for the Ritz party resulted in a poor catch of 3 flounder and a bluefish .
Although the fishing was slow, cousins Matthew and Andrew, enjoyed riding on the tuna tower aboard MIYOT.
August 7, 2004: A half-day charter for the Spalding family produced a catch of 25 to 30 flounder with 5 keepers.
Later in the day, the Whipkey party boarded MIYOT for some inshore fishing and hooked 20 flatfish with 1 keeper and a sea mullet ..
August 6, 2004: A half-day trip on the inside produced a catch of about 80 flounder with 5 keepers for the West Virginia crew.
They ended the day early because of an approaching strong cold front, but they plan a flounder trip tomorrow afternoon.
