About 2, 700 people had descended on Wellsville to take part in the Lions Club-sponsored trout derby on the Genesee River.
“I heard some yelling, ” said Jeffrey Fredericks, 63, who was fishing nearby when the commotion broke out.

No one can dispute the fact that Alaska is the sport fishing capital of the world.
With a tourism industry centered around sport fishing, it is not surprising that there are many fishing derbies held throughout the state.
Alaska is home to some of the most rewarding fishing derbies in the world.
Nearly every derby official can recall times when a fish large enough to win was caught by anglers who did not purchase a derby ticket before going fishing.
Just ask the several anglers who missed out on the $32, 000 prize in the 1996 Homer Halibut Derby when they came back to the dock with a fish large enough to have won the jackpot.

The derby enjoyed a near record turnout and the weather was perfect for the event with temperatures in the mid 70's and very little wind.
Over 960 fishermen registered for the derby, and many of them brought in some very nice fish.
Derby organizer Derek Allbee thanked the participants for this last statistic as it helps the lake, the fish population and the hatcheries to maintain the populations in Pyramid Lake (continued below) .
Another surprise this year came during the Raffle when a generous participant brought in a pedigreed Chocolate Lab and donated it to the Derby to be auctioned off with all proceeds donated to the Derby for the children.
This was an extremely generous donation to the derby as the breeder could have brought much more for himself for such a valuable dog, and the buyer was intent on winning the bid.
Much of this is directly attributable to those who support our Derby as the MD Fish Derby has been the #1 source of special event fund raiser funding for BDSRA for 4 years running.
Model Dairy Charity Fishing Derby would like to send a special thank you out to the following folks who make the event possible and succesful:.
Derby Volunteers - The folks in the orange hats who spend many months of planning and organization of the event and work hard all weekend long, on very little sleep, to make sure everything goes well for all who participate.
