Fish processing jobs halved since Finnie took charge holyrood - 2004-06-07 Shadow Fisheries Minister Mr Richard Lochhead MSP has today (Monday) revealed shocking new figures showing a massive 54 percent decline in fish processing jobs since the Labour/Liberal coalition government took office in 1999, while only 11 percent of last years 1.8 million pounds hardship scheme for onshore fishing businesses was paid out, with not one penny going to the processing sector.Mr Lochhead has written to Ross Finnie calling on the Scottish Government to reverse the decline in the fish processing industry by funding an action plan put together last year.
Rather than protecting an industry that sustains thousands of jobs and produces world class healthy products, Ministers like Ross Finnie have left it to wither on the vine.It is unforgivable that Ministers have shown no interest in saving one of the jewels in the food industrys crown.
It would be madness if a country with Scotlands fishing tradition and appalling health record was to allow more fish processors go to the wall.
