DEQ.utah.gov - News Release: Fish Advisory issued for Carp in Utah Lake
Fish Advisory issued for Carp in Utah Lake Salt Lake City – A fish consumption advisory has been issued for carp found in Utah Lake after state officials found elevated levels of PCBs in the fish.
Fish consumption advisory signs will be posted at access points to Utah Lake stating that:.
Adults should limit their consumption of carp taken from Utah Lake to no more than one 8-ounce servings per month; Women who may become pregnant, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and young children should not eat carp from Utah Lake.
Any health risks associated with eating carp from Utah Lake are based on long-term consumption and are not tied to eating fish occasionally.
Fish were collected from Utah Lake as part of the June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program’s effort to reduce and control the carp population, and determine whether they are fit for human consumption, for use as animal feed, or are safe for other uses.
Because PCBs accumulate in fat, exposure to PCBs from fish can be significantly reduced by removing the skin and fat from fish filets.
Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Utah County Health Department worked in partnership to issue this advisory.
Feral Fish Net Environmental Rewards Media Release 8 April 1999
FERAL FISH 'NET' ENVIRONMENTAL REWARDS 'Who would image feral fish could cause as much damage as rabbits in devastating native species and degrading our land and water resources.
'European Carp may be the fish most likely to grace the menu in Europe, but in Australia it is simply bad news.
All of that may be set to change however, with demand for Carp fish leather, fish fertiliser, canned fish, pet food and bait for cray pots increasing.
Mrs Stone said that in addition to being a new industry, innovative Carp fisheries and manufacturing operations in rural Victoria and New South Wales were also netting potentially big environmental rewards..
'European Carp have reached plague proportions in the Murray-Darling Basin.
In some stretches of the Murray for example, Carp are up to 96% of the total fish community.
They seem to be able to thrive in conditions other fish can't, ' Sharman Stone said..
'Carp are a destructive pest that thrive in disrupted river systems.
A 1993 study by Wager and Jackson indicates that the spawning and feeding habits of Carp have contributed to the decline of endangered and vulnerable native fish such as the Trout Cod, Yarra Pygmy Perch, Dwarf Galaxias and Ewen Pygmy Perch..

"The Carp is the Queen of Rivers: a stately, good and very subtle fish".
Carp -- Queen of Rivers or Pig With Fins?.
People call them rough fish , and accuse them of eating walleye eggs and ruining ducks' food.
Is this any way to treat a fish that British and Russian anglers prize, a fish that is popular in European, Asian and southern U.S.
cuisines? Carp is the most widely eaten fish in the world -- why do Northerners despise it? .
Is carp too common for us? Do we distrust fish with mustaches? .
Tom Dickson, carp fishing enthusiast and staff writer for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Fish and Wildlife Division said, "People up here have a prejudice against what they call rough fish -- carp, buffalo, gar and others.
It couldn"t be their scales, because the scales on a walleye are rougher than those on a buffalo fish." .
In 1990 he co-wrote a book with Rob Buffler called Fishing for Buffalo: A Guide to the Pursuit, Lore and Cuisine of Buffalo, Carp, Mooneye, Gar and Other Rough Fish, which sold well in Ohio, Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri, where carp is the third most popular game fish, but it bombed in the North.
