For more than a hundred million years, sea turtles have been swimming in the world's oceans.
Today, there are seven species of sea turtle: the grass-eating green turtle; the sea sponge-eating hawksbill; the olive ridley; the Kemp's ridley, which is the smallest species; the loggerhead; the flatback of Australia; and the giant leatherback.
In Sea Turtles, he offers a comprehensive and compelling account of their history and life cycle based on the most recent scientific data - and suggests what we can do now to save them.
Illustrated with stunning color photographs by the world's leading nature photographers, Sea Turtles will inform and inspire readers of all ages everywhere.
Jim Spotila's new sea turtle book has an ambitious subtitle.
In the enormous and ever growing literature on marine turtles, how could any single volume be a 'Complete' guide to all the fundamental aspects of their biology and conservation? Ambitious, but successful.
Amazon.co.uk: Deep-Sea Biology: A Natural History of Organisms at the Deep-Sea Floor: Books: J.D. Gage, P.A. Tyler
Deep-Sea Biology: A Natural History of Organisms at the Deep-Sea Floor (Paperback) .
Deep-Sea Biology provides a comprehensive account of the natural history of the organisms associated with the deep-sea floor, and examines their relationship with this remote and inhospitable environment.
In the initial chapters, the authors describe the physico-chemical nature of the deep-sea floor and the methods used to collect and study its fauna.
Finally, there is a discussion of man's exploitation of deep-sea resources and his use of this environment for waste disposal on the fauna of this, the earth's largest ecosystem.
An excellent overview of deep sea biology for the biologist (not a good book for people without a scientific background).

Steller Sea Lion Physiology
Females stay with their pups for about 9 days before beginning a regular routine of foraging trips to sea.
Weaning is not sharply defined as it is for most other pinniped species, but probably takes place gradually during the winter and spring prior to the following breeding season.
It is not uncommon to observe 1- or 2-year-old sea lions suckling from an adult female.
Steller sea lion are distributed across the North Pacific Ocean rim from northern Hokkaido, Japan, through the Kuril Islands, Okhotsk Sea, and Commander Islands in Russia, the Aleutian Islands, central Bering Sea, and southern coast of Alaska, and south to the Channel Islands off California.
During the May-to-July breeding season, Steller sea lions congregate at more that 40 rookeries, where adult males defend territories, pups are born, and mating takes place.
Sea lions continue to gather at both rookeries and haul-out sites outside of the breeding season.
Steller sea lions are opportunistic predators, feeding primarily of a wide variety of fishes and cephalopods.
Prey varies geographically and seasonally.
Steller sea lions have been known to prey on harbor seal, fur seal, ringed seal, and possibly sea otter pups, but this would represent only a supplemental component to the diet.

Jim Spotila made headlines at a sea turtle conference in Costa Rica, in February 2004, when he stated that without dramatic conservation measures the Pacific leatherback turtle population could disappear within ten years.
Now Spotila, co-principal investigator of Costa Rican Sea Turtles and researcher at Drexel University, has come out with a timely and authoritative book on the world’s sea turtles and their plight.
Sea Turtles: A Complete Guide to Their Biology, Behavior, and Conservation is a far-reaching summary of the history and current state of sea turtle biology..
Illustrated with stunning photographs, this book covers each species of sea turtle in detail, as well as their evolutionary history, natural history, and conservation.
It draws on Spotila’s decades of experience with sea turtles, and deep concern about their uncertain future, to draw a picture that is as poignant as it is compelling.
