Having had as many as 8 tanks at one time, I have had experience with Cichlids (not African), Gouramis, Plecos, Bettas and Live Bearers.

My husband and I recently bought a 10 gallon tank, as our Betta appeared sick or depressed we decided to try everything in the book to cheer the little guy up, added two Zebra Danios.
Unfortunately nothing worked, not even the several meds we bought, he passed away soon after we purchased the tank.
So we decided to go the distance and start our own aquarium, adding two Corys (spotted, I believe), and two Silver-tipped Tetras..
When your ammonia levels (which should be at zero for an established tank) go down, your nitrites and nitrates will be going up.
The levels of all three should be zero in a healthy tank.

The main aquarium is a 117, 000 gallon artificial reef which is home to over 4, 000 tropical fish from all over the world, 3 species of stingrays and 6 species of sharks.

How to stock a saltwater aquarium tank - Helium
After some time and consideration, we decided that an aquarium would be a perfect fit for the space in question.
I had enjoyed keeping freshwater aquariums as a little guy and thought we'd do something of that variety in our new home.
Aquariums of the freshwater variety were easy to care for with some maintenance.
We went to the nearest aquarium supply store with this in mind, and left with everything I would need to fully cycle the bacterial colony of a new saltwater tank.
We got the payload home and proceeded, per the saleswoman's instructions, to prepare the tank for cycling.
We started by rinsing the substrate several times to remove any leftover debris and placed it in the bottom of the similarly rinsed tank.
When the temperature got to its target, I placed the bags that held the Hermit crabs and Astraea snails into the tank for them to get to temperature and to begin acclimating them to their new home.
This entailed removing small amounts of water from the bags and introducing equal small amounts of water from the tank every ten or fifteen minutes.
And the snails were to keep the tank free of algae.
The nitrifying bacterial colonies were establishing themselves and processing the waste material in the tank.
